Constant interest rate peaks, a poor currency and an upcoming winter with the risk of high electricity costs. Neither part seems to scare Norwegians from traveling.
Several recent surveys show that Norwegians’ desire to travel is alive and well despite the fact that a pound now costs NOK 13.77, a dollar costs NOK 11.22 and for a euro you have to fork out NOK 12.00.
A Danish krone is priced at 1.61 Norwegian krone, and the Swedish krone is two øre more expensive than our own.
This sends the holiday budget flying for everyone who travels abroad.

Where do we want to go?
Gran Canaria, Thailand, Vietnam, Dubai and Cape Verde are popular destinations for Norwegians in winter. The Canary Islands are by far the most popular “southern travel destination”.
But it is not only southern beaches and sun that beckon. Shopping, musicals and museums are also tempting for Norwegians.
Triple price
Four out of ten Norwegians dream of a city break to, for example, London, Paris or Rome in autumn or winter, according to a recent survey carried out by Kantar Media for the travel organizer TUI.
The dream
As many as 39 per cent of those questioned answered that a city break is what you dream about most in autumn and winter.
While the Canary Islands take second place with 18 percent and the Caribbean, the Maldives and the United States share third place as a dream destination with 17 percent.

On break
– Nevertheless, the choice of the slightly shorter city holidays and classic package tours to Gran Canaria may indicate that you are putting your big travel dream on hold. After all, these are destinations with shorter flight times and prices that can be adapted to most people’s wallets, says TUI Norway’s head of communications, Anne Mørk-Løwengreen.

– The proportion of Norwegians who plan to travel abroad in the next 12 months has increased by 8 percentage points since the last survey in spring, from 53 to 61 per cent.
Only 13 per cent of Norwegians state that they will not travel abroad, while 25 per cent are unsure.
It is important to note that dreaming about a trip abroad is not the same as the total number of people going to make the dream come true.

The best tip for travel bargains
– It is very fully booked around Christmas/New Year, but if you instead choose to travel now in November, you have good opportunities to get good value for money. Then you often get a higher standard at a lower price than in high season such as Christmas/New Year and the winter holidays, says Mørk-Løwengreen and continues:
This happens with the points
– It is also a great advantage to be able to be as flexible as possible and investigate several different travel dates. Find out when the prices are most favorable first, and ask for vacation from the boss afterwards, instead of the other way around.
Most people choose Gran Canaria
In a Nordic survey carried out by Kantar for the travel organizer Apollo, 40 per cent answered that, despite economic downturns, they will travel as much as before.
At the same time, almost nine out of ten state that they have never borrowed money to finance a holiday trip.
A survey carried out by Ipsos for DNB shows that the average population will spend NOK 22,090 on this year’s holiday. This is an increase of NOK 2,418 from last year.
Families with children increase the average the most, of which households with children between 11 and 14 years have the highest budget of NOK 38,268.

Disappointed
– There has been high demand for travel throughout the year, but it particularly picked up in spring and not least now ahead of winter. There is no doubt that many were disappointed by the summer weather here at home, and are now dreading a long, cold and dark half-year of winter, says Beatriz Rivera, communications manager at Apollo.
In the survey, half stated that they would have had nothing to look forward to if they stopped travelling.

That’s why we travel
One in five would feel unmotivated and restless, and a full 16 per cent answered that they would be downright unhappy.
At the same time, 34 per cent of those questioned believe that traveling strengthens the relationship with friends and family – and just as many say that traveling simply makes them happy.
– In a hectic everyday life, there is rarely enough time. The reason why we prioritize travel so much, even in times of recession, is therefore primarily rooted in a fundamental need for time and space to cultivate quality time with our loved ones, experience exciting things and, not least, to be able to just be, says Rivera.
