The writer fell asleep peacefully in the evening on Thursday evening, a week before his 92nd birthday, with his wife Gīna Jercena, the newspaper “Verdens Gang” reports.
During his decades of literary activity, Askillsen has written several novels and many short stories. Askillsen’s work has restraint and minimalism, and he is considered one of the greatest post-war Norwegian writers.
“He set his own standard for short stories and prose art, and [viņa aiziešana] is a big loss for Norwegian literature, “said Ingeri Engelstad, a spokeswoman for Oktober.
Askillsen’s debut in literature was a collection of 1953 short stories “Now I will always accompany you home”.
He has received several awards for his work, including the Nordic Academy Award from the Swedish Academy in 2009.
A selection of Askillsen’s short stories “Bucket full time” has been published in Latvian.
