Elinor Sandberg (31) is now being severely harassed by Norwegians who support Palestine, because she is Jewish and because she once served in the Israeli army.
“I also hope you get your arms and legs chopped off…”, “I hope your participation in the killing of innocents comes back home to you”, “you terrorist bastard you are proud of genocide and the killing of children (…) Zionist damn Nazi shit”, “Damn terrorist child killer what are you doing in an occupied country” are among the many messages she has received in recent days.
– I was nervous before, but I didn’t want to play the victim card, so I took off the Star of David and kept a low profile, and don’t want to tell people that I’m Jewish. Then I will be exposed with untruths on this website, says a despairing Elinor Sandberg to Nettavisen. Now she has gone to the police with a number of messages that have been posted about her on various social media.

Served in the IDF
It all started when someone retrieved photos from her private Facebook profile. The photos are 10 years old and show Sandberg as an Israeli soldier. She is both a Norwegian and an Israeli citizen. Therefore, she was called up for military service in Israel.
In 2011, she chose to travel to Israel and complete two years of military service. At the time, the young girl wanted to become part of Israeli society. She then told about the plans in, among other things Drammens Tidende.
– As an Israeli citizen, I was offered to serve in the IDF. When I was there, I took a Hebrew course to learn the language better. Then I served on the border with Egypt and made sure that smugglers did not cross the border. I mostly sat and monitored the border on surveillance cameras, Sandberg tells Nettavisen.
On her FB page she has pictures of herself and friends she met during the service. Now these are being misused to spread falsehoods that she has killed children in Gaza. On the online forum “Free Palestine – Save Gaza”, photos of her in Israeli uniform have been shared along with strong statements, although the website has rules against hate speech and harassment of individuals.
There a post begins with: “Her name is: Elinor Sandberg born 1994. And she likes to kill children”, followed by an upside down smiley face.
– It is not true
– I have received many ugly messages, and it is not true. I have nothing against Palestine, and have deep sympathy for those suffering in the Gaza Strip. I have not been active in commenting on this conflict, and so I am being left out in this way.
– They have published lies about me on a website with 20,000 members. There I am portrayed as a terrorist and murderer who has traveled to Israel to kill innocent Palestinian children. It is not true. That’s not why I enlisted in the Israeli Defense Forces. I spent two years on the border with Egypt and made sure that smugglers did not cross the border illegally, says Sandberg to Nettavisen.
After the terrorist attack against Israel on 7 October, and the subsequent fierce Israeli reaction, Sandberg has chosen not to participate in the debate on the Israel/Palestine conflict. She is among the many Jews in Norway who have felt an unease and fear of reprisals as a result of Israel’s attack.
– It is dangerous to spread these lies online. There are many who believe that. It creates hatred towards ordinary people, she says.
The police: – We are taking this seriously
The police confirm that they have received a report from Sandberg.
– We take the matter seriously and the police can inform you that an investigation has been launched, says police attorney Silje Krogstad Juul in the East police district.
Nettavisen has been in contact with several of those who have expressed themselves very strongly about Sandberg on social media.
Two of them believe that Sandberg herself sought publicity about her connection to the Israeli military when she allowed herself to be interviewed in, among other things Drammens Tidende in 2011. They point to the abuses that are now taking place against civilian Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and that they want to make people like Sandberg responsible, who support what they feel are war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

– Even sought publicity
The fact that her statements were made 12 years ago, and that today she does not want to participate in the public debate about what is happening in the Gaza Strip, does not seem to be important. Those Nettavisen have spoken to do not wish to be named in connection with this case. Others that Nettavisen has tried to get in touch with have not responded to our enquiry.
– It is true that I think what is happening in Gaza is terrible. War is terrible. And it is terrible that so many civilians and innocent people, both in Israel and in Gaza, have lost their lives. They are welcome to criticize me for having been a soldier in the IDF, says Sandberg.
– But spreading lies that are not true, such as that I have been in Gaza and killed innocent people, is not okay. I’m also not going to tolerate being exposed in the media, as it’s illegal, and we all have to follow Norwegian laws and regulations in the end. I also think that instead of spreading hatred, lies and threats, we should rather try to hold factual and good dialogues, she says.
