SÖLDEN – The reason for Norwegian skier Ragnhild Mowinckel’s disqualification in the opening race of the World Cup in Sölden was not irregular wax, but the fact that the servicemen used tools contaminated with banned fluorine when preparing the skis.

This was stated by the ski manufacturer Head, which after Saturday’s case was looking for the reasons for the violation of the new rule.

Mowinckelová was excluded from the opening giant slalom due to the measured extremely high level of fluorine on the slide. After the first round of the race, the two-time Olympic silver medalist was in sixth place.

A dirty tool was to blame

The wax used was inspected by the FIS ski federation and did not contain fluorine. Now the ski manufacturer has come to the conclusion that a dirty tool was to blame.

“We are glad that together we managed to discover the cause of exceeding the limit values, and it is an important guideline that we need to pay attention to in the future when preparing skis.” said the head of the sports department, Rainer Salzgeber.

According to him, Mowinckelová, who as the third woman in the giant slalom at this year’s World Championships in Méribel, was one of the favorites in Sölden, was completely innocent. “He gets his skis completely prepared from us before the race,” stated.

The first case of disqualification after the introduction of the ban

In Sölden, right at the beginning of the season, it was the first case of disqualification in skiing after the introduction of a ban on the use of waxes with fluorine, which is harmful to the environment and human health.

Due to an EU regulation in the interest of protecting the environment and human health, it was originally supposed to apply from the 2020/21 season, but in the end, the controversial rule did not manage to be introduced even last season. It is only valid from this year, but there are still doubts about the reliability of the performed tests.
