It will come as no surprise to anyone that air pollution is not healthy. But scientists from the Universitetet i Bergen (Norway) discovered how big, or actually how small, the influence really is.
Even smaller little children
The Norwegian scientists examined 4,286 children and their mothers. They measured the amount of greenery and air pollution in the areas where the mothers lived during their pregnancy. They compared this to the birth weight of the babies, also taking into account other factors that could influence the weight.
What turned out? The smallest babies were born in the areas with the most air pollution. This effect turned out to be less significant if the area had a lot of greenery. Smaller babies, because of their smaller lungs, are more susceptible to lung diseases later in life. The researchers therefore argue for more greenery in polluted areas.
