“Norwegian Property Heirs Join Wealthy Expat Community in Switzerland”

In 2018, property heirs Peder Rye Lier (35) and Phoebe Hveem Lier (28) married in a grand celebrity wedding in Venice with the financial elite, heirs and influencers on the guest list.

Finansavisen referred to it at the time as “Norway’s most expensive wedding” with an estimated price tag of ten million kroner. The party was held in the same place where Amal and George Clooney got married back in 2014, and fashion magazine Vogue followed the wedding from the inside.

While Phoebe Hveem Lier is the daughter of the billionaire and property investor Paal Hveem, Peder Rye Lier together with his brother inherited a significant property portfolio from their father Erik-Arne Lier in 2014.

In 2021, Phoebe Hveem Lier had an estimated net worth of just over ten million kroner, while her father had over 400 million kroner in assets, according to the tax lists. According to Kapital, he is worth NOK 2.8 billion.

The 28-year-old, who has 13,000 followers on Instagram, sits on the board of his father’s investment company Greenwich Land Securities. She also sits on the b shares in Pchl Invest as, where her father has the a shares and control.

Rye Lier has built up a career in property in the capital, where he sits on the boards of a number of property companies. His wholly-owned property company Pegasi as had a profit of over NOK 100 million in 2021, and was listed with assets of over NOK 300 million. He had an estimated net worth of NOK 54 million in 2021.

Same resort as Røkke

Now the two heirs have moved to Switzerland, specifically the city of Lugano, where a number of other Norwegian wealthy people have also moved in recent months.

Both the daughter of property billionaire Ivar Tollefsen, Ninja Tollefsen, investors Fredrik Halvorsen and Odd Johnny Winge, as well as Kjell Inge Røkke have reported moving to the same city near the border with Italy.

According to the Folkeregisteret, the couple Lier recently got a new residential address at the “Collina d’Oro” apartment resort, where it is possible to rent apartments for a longer period.

The couple are by no means the only wealthy Norwegians who have announced a move to the complex on the hill in Lugano. Both the kindergarten heir Eystein Sævareid Aase and Aker owner Kjell Inge Røkke are registered at this address in the National Register.

To DN, the couple is tight-lipped, but Peder Rye Lier confirms in a text message that he and his wife have moved to Switzerland.

– Agreed that we have moved to Lugano. Otherwise, we have no comment, he writes.

Heir flight

The list of wealthy Norwegians who take their wealth to Switzerland is getting longer and longer, partly because a number of young heirs have reported moving in recent months. DN has so far surveyed well over 50 wealthy individuals who have moved to Switzerland, 18 of whom are heirs to some of the country’s largest fortunes.

While several have had large fortunes transferred from their parents before they moved, there are others who received the inheritance a few years back.

In February, it became known that property billionaire Ivar Tollefsen had transferred the b shares in Fredensborg to his daughter Ninja Tollefsen before she moved to the city of Lugano in Switzerland. The transfer corresponded to values of around NOK 45 billion, and ensured father Tollefsen a significantly smaller tax bill. At the same time, he will be left with control and the A shares in the company.

The Reitan heirs Kristoffer (24) and Viktoria (22) also received a wealth transfer of around NOK 20 billion when they moved to Switzerland last year. Ingrid Gjelsten (21), who is the daughter of the investor and billionaire Bjørn Rune Gjelsten, had 80 percent of the Gjelsten empire transferred before she moved to Switzerland. At the time, the father made no secret of the fact that the generational change came earlier than planned and was due to increased taxes.

Peder Rye Lier and Phoebe Hveem Lier also know well other heirs who have already moved down. On Hveem’s Instagram, she recently shared pictures of herself on a bachelor party in London together with Rikke Sandvold and Betine Erla Sandvold, who have both moved to the outskirts of the city of Zurich.
