Norwegian Princess Märtha Louise will marry her American boyfriend Durek Verrett in August 2024. They will marry in a hotel in the village of Geiranger, the Norwegian court announced on Wednesday.
“We are incredibly happy to be able to celebrate our love in the beautiful surroundings of Geiranger. It means a lot to us that we can bring our loved ones together in a place so rich in history and spectacular nature,” the couple said. “It’s the perfect place to embrace our love.”
The couple is not sharing any further details about the wedding at this time.
King Harald and Queen Sonja congratulate their daughter and her boyfriend. “We are happy to welcome Durek Verrett to the family and we look forward to celebrating the big day with them. We wish Märtha and Durek all the best.”
Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit also congratulated the couple. “We wish Märtha, Durek and the girls all the best for the future.” 51-year-old Märtha Louise and Verrett, three years younger, have been together since 2019. They have been engaged since June last year.
Controversial ‘shaman’ Verrett will not receive a royal title
Verrett is a self-proclaimed shaman, someone who says he makes contact with the spirit world to heal people and make predictions.
The public reacted negatively to the princess’s new love. Verrett works in a fairly controversial manner. For example, people who are treated by the shaman must give him written permission to touch their genitals.
Shortly after starting their relationship, they started working together. They went by the name The princess and the shaman on tour together.
Märtha Louise resigned her royal duties to distinguish between her own activities and those of the royal family. She can continue to call herself a princess. Verrett will not receive a royal title after their marriage.
