The temporary arming applies until midnight on 1 January 2024.

– The police’s most important job is to keep the population safe. Although there are no specific threats against Norway, after an overall assessment, the Director of Police has decided on temporary arming to ensure the best possible preparedness through the New Year’s weekend, says Director of Emergency Preparedness Tone Vangen.

In the updated threat assessment, PST describes that churches and Christian places of assembly appear as current terrorist targets in Europe.

The threat level in Norway is unchanged, but PST assessed earlier this autumn that the threat to Jewish and Israeli targets has intensified in Norway.

The population may experience an increased presence of visible and armed police in the coming days, the police directorate writes. The Directorate encourages people to celebrate the New Year as normal.

– New Year is a time that gathers many people for various events in religious communities. This is a preventive and safety-creating measure that helps to strengthen preparedness by ensuring increased efficiency and speed in the response from the police throughout the country, says Vangen.

Correction

In an earlier version of the case, it was stated that the temporary armament applies from 01 January. The correct thing is that it applies until 1 January 2024.
