Norwegian playwright, author and poet Jon Fosse received the Nobel Prize for Literature on Sunday. He received the award in the Swedish capital Stockholm from King Carl Gustaf.

Chairman Anders Olsson of the Nobel Committee for Literature said Fosse’s work is about the difficulties in life.

At the awards ceremony he said that Fosse is “not a difficult writer”. “He uses the simplest words and writes about experiences we can all relate to: divorce, death and the fragility of love.”

Fosse is the first Norwegian winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature since novelist Sigrid Undset 95 years ago.

The Norwegian has after his first literary work Red Black published several novels, poetry collections, essay collections and children’s books from 1983. Much of his work is published in Dutch by Uitgeverij Oevers from Zaandam.
