The 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature went to Norwegian playwright Jon Fosse (64).
The Swedish Academy announced on the 5th (local time) that it had selected Norwegian writer Jon Fosse as the winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Academy stated the reason for its selection, saying, “Innovative plays and prose allowed things that could not be said to be heard.”
Fosse is a widely known master in Northern Europe. He wrote about 40 plays and also published novels, short stories, children’s books, poetry, and essays. His plays have been performed on stages around the world more than 900 times, and as the Norwegian playwright whose works have been performed the most after Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906), who wrote ‘A Doll’s House,’ he is evaluated as leading the forefront of modern theater.
The academy’s permanent secretary-general, Mats Malm, called Fosse around 1 p.m. that day and told him the news of his selection for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Fosse, who received this news while driving, is said to have said, “I will drive home safely (while keeping my cool).”
Fosse will be awarded a prize of 11 million kronor (about 1.35 billion won), a medal, and a certificate.
