Norwegian Markus Rooth becomes Olympic decathlon champion

Paris. Norway’s Markus Rooth has won the gold medal in the decathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with a cumulative total of 8,796 points at the end of the ten stages of this combined event.

Rooth secured victory on Saturday at the end of the last race, the 1,500 metres, to finish leading the podium ahead of the German Leo Neugebauer (silver, 8,748 points) and the Granadan Lindon Victor (8,711 points).

Olympic defending champion Damian Warner of Canada had lost all hopes at the end of Saturday’s morning session when he failed to clear any bars in the pole vault.

World record holder and local idol Kevin Mayer was out injured on Thursday, leaving the French public without one of its great hopes on the purple tartan of Saint-Denis.

At 23, Rooth has achieved the greatest success of his career. He was injured at the European Championships in Rome last June but was able to recover in time for this event in the French capital.

Puerto Rican Ayden Owens-Delerme finished in ninth place with 8,437 points.

He had finished Friday’s session virtually in a medal position, but the events on Saturday saw him drop down the rankings and move away from that possibility.
