Norwegian Man Discovers Gold Treasure: The Find of the Century

Sep 07, 2023 at 10:14 PM Update: 3 hours ago

A man from Norway decided a few months ago to follow his doctor’s advice and start walking more. He bought a metal detector for his new hobby and promptly stumbled upon the “gold catch of the century”.

Erlend Bore, 51, made his remarkable discovery near the city of Stavanger. “I first thought of chocolate or toy coins,” he said in conversation with CBS News. “It was totally unexpected.”

It concerns nine gold medals, three gold rings and ten gold pearls. Ole Madsen, the director of the Archaeological Museum at Stavanger University, speaks of “the Norwegian gold find of the century”. “Finding so much gold in one go is very special.” The penultimate similar find was made in the nineteenth century.

The museum will soon exhibit the found objects. Bore is unlucky that the pre-1650 finds go to the state. His objects were probably made around 500.

Under the same law, Bore does receive compensation. The same applies to the owner of the land on which the new amateur archaeologist made his special find.
