There are many Norwegians who have followed the 25-year-old from Ekeberg in Oslo in recent days. Former Olympic winner in alpine skiing Kjetil André Aamodt is euphoric.

– One of the greatest Norwegian achievements of all time, the greatest in my mind. Magical, says Aamodt to VG just before 0130.

Erik Follestad is a big Hovland fan. The former ice hockey player and VGTV profiler calls Hovland’s performance on the pitch insane.

– I’m not a fan of comparing Norwegian sporting achievements across sports, but this is probably right at the top. He’s so cool too. Impossible to dislike, says Follestad to VG.

Hovland is the 14th player in history to take this trophy.

Erik Follestad has even played golf with Hovland.

– Hovland plays Kevin Wright’s tournament every summer, and I know who will take the bar bill next year, says Follestad.

And you get paid to be the best at golf. Hovland gets NOK 192 million for the victory. The sum is duly mentioned in several places.

Author Jo Nesbø is also a keen golf enthusiast.

– This has a place in the trophy room for the greatest Norwegian sporting achievements of all time. As a golfing geek, this is the biggest thing I’ve experienced since Tiger came back and won the Masters, says Nesbø to VG.

This is what it looked like when Hovland laid the foundations for the triumph:

Former Olympic champion in alpine skiing, Kjetil Jansrud, also comes along when Hovland plays.

– Absolutely crazy. An incredible feat by a wonderful guy with great attitudes. And that even if it doesn’t go the way I hope tonight. I look forward to following along! Waste of money. He wreaks havoc in a gigantic sport. There is no Santa hat here, says Jansrud to VG.

Nor does the new father of two like to compare sporting achievements to each other.

– But you cannot ignore the fact that some sports are bigger than others – and golf is among the biggest, says Jansrud.

TV legend and former golf commentator Hallvard Flatland has been watching the TV broadcasts from Atlanta and throughout Sunday had great faith in a historic triumph for Hovland quite a while before it was all decided.

– Tonight I am actually most impressed by how mentally strong Viktor is. Now he has been under pressure on several holes, but has saved himself each time, says Flatland to VG.

In the commentary booth of Per Haugsrud and Henrik Bjørnstad, there was an electric atmosphere with words such as “our little boy”, “sweet nose” and “tullebukken”.

– We have to pinch ourselves, says Europsport commentator Per Haugsrud during the broadcast.
