When Marius Höibråten traveled to the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia, he missed the birth of his first child.
Once there, his Urawa Red Diamonds lost the semi-final against Manchester City.
After the Norwegian scored an own goal.
At the end of the first half, Joan Cancelo made his way around the right flank, looking for onrushing teammates with a low pass.
Instead, the Japanese club’s Norwegian centre-back Marius Höibråten got a hit on the ball – and slid it in behind his own goalkeeper.
It meant 1–0 to Manchester City.

But it got worse.
When Bernardo Silva set the final score at 3-0, the finish was controlled via the Norwegian unlucky man – who had a busy week to say the least.
While Höibråten traveled to the tournament, the water went out in Norway. Then he got to follow the birth – on Facetime.
– She delivered top marks on her own with her mother and sister present at the hospital, says the centre-back VG.
The 28-year-old first-time parent was then granted a quick visit with his fiancee and newborn son – before he had to hop on the flight back.

Final on Friday
But after the exodus, will it be the straight way home to the family? Not quite yet.
The bronze medal match against Egyptian Al-Ahly awaits on Friday.
On the same day, Manchester City will face Brazilian Fluminense in the final.
As the reigning European champion, the chances there are historically good. Not since Corinthians defeated Chelsea in 2012 has Europe’s representative failed to win the tournament.
