– You don’t understand anything. It’s so surreal, we’re just ordinary working people. It is so big and unreal, says a clearly affected Turid Selbekk to VG on Monday evening.
On Saturday, she and Norwegian Espen Knudsen took part in a TV recording on Swedish TV4 where they won 100,000 Swedish kroner a month, over a period of 20 years.
This corresponds to around NOK 23.4 million.
On the clip from the TV broadcast, published on TV4’s websitewe see Knudsen embracing his girlfriend in a rush of joy after the win was a fact.
– How did it feel to receive the good news?
– It’s like asking Northug how he felt just when he crossed the finish line. It is very special, replies the Norwegian, who still lives in the Oslo area.

Quit working two days later
Turid had prepared his boss that Saturday’s event could end in a quick dismissal:
– I asked him to prepare the resignation papers in advance and to watch on TV. This morning I called to cancel, and then he just laughed, chuckles Turid.
She says that several of her colleagues have contacted and congratulated her in recent days.
– The boss understood me very well. I said I could stand up sometimes if there was a need, says Turid, who has worked in the industrial company for over 20 years.
Espen, who is retired himself, assures that the couple will live as normal despite the large prize money.
– This is a lot of money over a long period of time. We will live as normal and have comfortable lives for 20 years, with the same friends we have always had, says Espen, and adds:
– Other than the fact that Turid has quit his job, there is little that will change.

Champagne on the plane
It all started last summer when Turid and Espen bought a scratch card together on impulse, in Turid’s hometown of Hallen in Sweden.
– We scratched three clovers, which means we won the opportunity to scratch new scratch cards on TV. Then we were also told that the minimum prize we were going to win was SEK 1.2 million, she says.
The couple had actually shelved this year’s holiday to save money for next summer, but when they found out they had won money, they put this year’s holiday plans on hold.
– We went straight from the TV recording on Saturday to Arlanda airport to get to Portugal. On the plane we celebrated with champagne, says Espen.

When VG asks if they have managed to digest that they have won, Turid replies that it will take some time.
– I still can’t quite understand it. I have watched the clip over a hundred times and every time I think “is this really us?”.
Now the new winners are enjoying the sun and warmth in more southern regions.
– Here in Portugal it is 30 degrees in the shade and not a cloud in the sky. It’s perfect for getting things a little distance. There have been many impressions in recent days, says Espen, as he sits on a sunbed on a beach in Portugal.
