Veteran Cecilia Braekhus, a Norwegian boxer born in Colombia, did not get a rematch this Saturday against American Jessica McCaskill, who had snatched her welterweight belts last year.
McCaskill, 36, defeated Braekhus by unanimous decision in a match held in the US city of Dallas (Texas).
The American jumped into the ring on offense and dominated much of the fight, landing several hard blows to her rival.
Braekhus, 39, withstood the blows and put McCaskill in trouble in the final rounds, who fought back trying to fight the fight, but his reaction ended up being insufficient.
“It was a close fight, I have to see her again. She is a very tough woman and I have to congratulate her,” Braekhus said.
The boxer, born in Cartagena and adopted as a child by Norwegian parents, did not achieve her goal of compensating for the defeat suffered last August against McCaskill, the first of her professional career.
Braekhus, who now has 36 wins and two losses, was the owner between 2014 and 2020 of the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO welter belts, which are now held by McCaskill (10-2).
Although he did consider retirement last year, Braekhus said after the fight that he would be ready for a third fight against McCaskill or a new challenge that may arise.
“I love boxing and if there is a good fight for me, I will be there,” he said.
The fight was one of the events prior to the fight between Nicaraguan Román ‘Chocolatito’ González and Mexican Juan Francisco Estrada that will take place on American Airlines in Dallas.
