Norwegian Author Vigdis Hjorth Explores Family Dynamics and Trauma with Unparalleled Depth

With incredible psychological depth, Norwegian author Vigdis Hjorth writes about a daughter whose story is denied by her mother and siblings.

In Norway, 64-year-old Vigdis Hjorth is undisputedly one of the country’s most important contemporary writers. In the German-speaking world, however, it is only now slowly becoming famous. For a long time, Hjorth’s books were dismissed as irrelevant “women’s literature”, the titles were translated cheesily and the books were incorrectly classified. She is considered a representative of the radical Scandinavian literature of self-exposure that originated with the Norwegian Dag Solstad and was carried out into the world by his compatriot, literary star Karl Ove Knausgård, and his “Mein Kampf” series.

Vigdis Hjorth’s content is absolutely not banal. Many of her novels deal with childhood trauma as well as complex and conflicting family constructs, which largely relate to the author’s autobiographical experiences. Similar to Knausgård’s case, after her books were published, family members also spoke out who felt misrepresented in the novels.
