A Norwegian man in his 50s has been arrested in Paraguay, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms to NRK.
– The Foreign Service is aware that a Norwegian citizen has been arrested in Paraguay and is providing consular assistance to that person. Due to statutory confidentiality, we cannot comment on further individual details in our follow-up of the case, writes communications manager Tuva Raanes Bogsnes in an e-mail to NRK.
The case has been covered by the local media, which has shared photos of what is supposed to be the arrest. Photos of what is apparently the man’s Norwegian passport have also been published.
Claims he attacked officer
According to local media, he was stopped on Sunday, when he was behaving suspiciously. It was a security guard who called the police, who was attacked when the police went to meet the man, reports a local TV station.
The Norwegian also attacked a police officer with a chain, according to the police. The officer was sent to hospital.
– We got control of the person. We found five containers of petrol and toilet paper, says Police Commissioner Edgar Vega to the TV channel.
They have sent the contents of the containers for further investigation.
The Norwegian would not comment or answer why he had these things with him, reports the TV channel. The police suspect that he was going to make a Molotov cocktail, according to media in Paraguay.
The police say he entered the country on 25 March this year, and has a residence permit until 25 September.
Paraguay is roughly in the middle of Latin America, bordering Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil.
