Norwegian Alexander (16) died after dramatic police chase in Sweden – VG

Alexander and his friend were riding a moped when they must have been chased by police into a residential area. It ended disastrously.

On May 12 Alexander Storåker died after a dramatic car chase in Lerum outside Gothenburg where he lived.

He and his friend were riding a moped in the area and were on their way out of a parking lot.

A civilian police patrol caught sight of them and slowed in on their side without giving a signal. The children got scared and drove off. The police drove after them and on a narrow path, in the middle of a residential area with playgrounds and houses.

It ended up with the moped crashing and Alexander dying. It’s unclear what he crashed with.

The case is among other things discussed by Aftonbladet.

Alexander was a Norwegian citizen and born in Tromsø, but moved to Sweden in 2007.

The father says that what has happened is completely incomprehensible:

– I think the boys were really scared, Frode Storåker tells VG.

– Meaningless

No one knows exactly what happened, because the friend does not remember the details of the accident. Swedish police are now investigating the case.

Alexander bought his moped last fall and spend all winter trying to get it repaired, his father says. On his 16th birthday he could finally drive it.

– One month and two days later we lost our dear Alexander. It’s so incredibly meaningless, says his father.

– There is no doubt that the police chased the moped. The question is why it was so important for the police to stop Alexander that they had to break their instructions and drive between townhouses on trails and 60-meter lanes where children and adults live.

Police: We need to get to the bottom of what has happened

VG has been in contact with Jonas Emilsson, who is investigating the case in the Västra Götaland police district. He says they will not comment on the matter until the investigation is ready.

VG has not succeeded in contacting chief investigator Kajsa Sundgren from the prosecution authority. On Saturday, she stated Expressen:

– We are investigating police actions related to the incident. We have to get to the bottom of what has happened, as far as it goes. Therefore, we do not comment on the report. I don’t want to say anything that could affect witnesses or other people to be questioned, she says.

To the same newspaper, area manager of the local police in Alingsås, Mikael Edvardsson, says that this is a tragic event:

– We from the police have a great understanding that the family has many questions and wants answers. But we cannot give any answers during an ongoing investigation. We are awaiting it and what is coming, he says.

Life on hold

– We are very heavy now. We start the day in the cemetery and have breakfast there, it has been our everyday life for two months now. It’s a comfort to go there.

Storåker says they also do not know the cause of death and cannot access the autopsy report.

– Everything’s on hold. What keeps us going is figuring out how this could happen.

A joy-spreader

LIFE HAPPY: His father describes Alexander as a typical teenager at home and a friend of pleasure among friends: – It was only after the accident happened and we got an insight into the other life he had that we realized how much he meant to others. Photo: Private

Storåker says that the son was active and interested in sports and schooling. During summer holidays in Norway there were camping, fishing and hiking. Last year he was on the Pulpit, along with his mate who was on the moped.

– He included everyone and was a joy-spreader. It was only after the accident happened and we got a glimpse into his other life that we realized how much he meant to others.

Alexander spent a lot of time both driving and watching. To honor him, his friends organized a memorial parade in which 200 mopeds took part and ran a round in the municipality.

Aftonbladet has compiled mini documents, which deal with the high number of police chases in Sweden in recent years.

In the documentary, Jörgen Lundälv, a Swedish professor of traffic medicine says:

– This is the worst I’ve seen.

See the documentary at the top of the case.

The family now hopes that the prosecutor takes the accident to court so that they get answers to all questions.

– Instead of falling asleep on the nights and pondering, the father ends.
