/ world today news/ Norway has earned about 334 billion kroner (31.3 billion dollars) from the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, reports the TV channel NRK. Eric Yalte and Ida Elisabeth Oberg Gosland made this calculation of incremental profit in their master’s thesis.
Excluding exports to the UK, the amount calculated by the thesis authors was 27% of total gas export earnings in 2022, which was a record year. The reduction and suspension of Russian gas supplies after the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine inflated the prices of this raw material, which allowed Norway to make good money from the supply of its gas.
“This is an insanely huge number. It’s disgusting that Norway is making money off of someone else’s misery. The government is making us feel uncomfortable being Norwegians,” commented Green Party leader Arild Hermstad. He calls his country a “war profiteer.”
The description “war profiteer” is used in reference to one’s own country and by the Socialist Left Party, the Union for Conservation of Nature and the Climate Fund of Norway. Others, including Petroleum and Energy Minister Tere Aasland, say Norway is supplying desperately needed gas to struggling Europe.
