Norway plans to raise the social media age from 13 to 15. Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre told VG that they want to protect children from harmful content better than before.
The authorities promise to monitor the new age limit more strictly than before. Studies have shown that up to 53 percent of 9-year-old Norwegian children are on social media. Among 11-year-olds, as many as 72 percent are on social media.
The Norwegian government is currently reviewing a law change that could introduce the possibility of identifying a child’s age when using a social media service.
In the past, children have gained access to social media as minors by accepting the terms of use of the service, which mention the age limit of 13 years.
According to the National Child Welfare Association, the most common age limit for social media services in Finland is 13 years.
