Norway to China: – False claims

On the Twitter account of the Chinese embassy in Kenya, a new case is shared about the disputed claims.

It was the controversial American investigative journalist Seymour Hersh who three weeks ago made the claims that the explosion in the Nord Stream II gas pipeline was a CIA operation. At the same time, he claimed that the US had cooperated with Norway on the operation.

“Information War”

Hersh has won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize, but has also launched what many believe to be conspiracy theories surrounding both the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the operation against Osama bin Laden.

American journalist Eliot Higgins also claims Chinese state media and other Chinese embassies have shared the theory that the US is behind the explosion.

Norway reacts to the spread of the theory.

– These claims are false. We encourage everyone to be critical of sources and not contribute to the spread of false information. The information war is part of Russia’s warfare against Ukraine, writes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a response to Dagbladet.

It was on 26 September that gas leaks were observed which turned out to be damage to the gas pipeline in the Baltic near the Danish island of Bornholm.

Norwegian government has also previously criticized Hersh’s claimswhen the case first appeared in the major newspaper Washington Post:

– These claims are of course just speculation, was the short but clear message from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Dagbladet at the time.

Russian claim

On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made a clear allusion to the matter in a statement.

– We will not let the West blow up gas pipelines again, Lavrov said in an obvious reference to the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea this autumn.

Russia has also previously claimed that Western powers are behind the sabotage against the pipelines, which carry gas between Russia and Germany.

Dagbladet has asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs if Norway will take up the matter with the Chinese authorities, but has not received an answer.

The Chinese embassy has so far not responded to Dagbladet’s inquiries.
