Norway. The Oil Fund intervenes in Orlen in the case of Polska Press

“The takeover (by Orlen) of Polska Press caused strong political and legal conflicts (…). The opposition, journalists and editors indicate that the transaction is an attempt to increase control over the media in Poland by the ruling PiS,” wrote the Norwegian PEN Club at the time. The Norwegian intervention in Orlen is the result of this letter.

Sigurd Brekke from the Oil Fund, answering a question from “Press”, stated that “There is a clear expectation that the companies (in which the fund invests) respect fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression (…)”.

“We conveyed our expectations to Orlen,” he added.

As it turns out, the Norwegian non-governmental organization proposed that the Oil Fund should consider withdrawing from Orlen if the Polish oil company “does not show respect for the functioning of independent media within the democratic infrastructure”.

Brekke also said that the takeover by Orlen Polska Press was also dealt with by the Ethics Council at the Norwegian Ministry of Finance.
