Norway: “spy whale” found dead – Allegedly trained by the Russian army (Video) – 2024-09-02 22:25:53

A beluga whale named “Hvaldimir” believed to have been trained as a spy by Russia has been found dead off the Norwegian coast.

The whale was first spotted in Norwegian waters in 2019 with a Russian-insignia camera attached to it, sparking espionage rumours.

Norwegian public broadcaster NRK reported that the whale’s carcass was found floating in Risavika Bay in southern Norway on Saturday by a father and son who were fishing.

The beluga, named after the Norwegian word for whale – hval – and the first name of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was pulled from the water by a crane and taken to a nearby port where it will be examined by experts.

“Unfortunately, we found Hvaldimir floating in the sea. It has died, but it is not immediately clear what the cause of death is,” marine biologist Sebastian Strand told NRK, adding that no significant external injuries were visible on the animal.

Strand, who has been tracking Hvaldimir’s adventures for the past three years on behalf of the Norwegian-based nonprofit organization Marine Mind, said he was deeply affected by the whale’s sudden death.

“It’s absolutely horrible,” Strand said. “He was obviously in good shape as of (Friday). So we just have to figure out what might have happened here.”

It is noted that Moscow has never responded to the claims about the spy whale whose causes of death are under investigation.
