The Norwegian Ice Hockey Federation (NIHF) withdrew its bid to host the 2027 World Championships because the Ministry of Culture and Equality denied funding. reported International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) website.
The tournament was to be staged in Berum and Trondheim.
NIHF head Tage Pettersen said the organization was “disappointed by the rejection without prior dialogue.”
“The Ice Hockey World Championship will be the biggest winter sporting event since the 1994 Olympics and will be of great significance for Norwegian sports,” added Pettersen.
The last time the Norwegians hosted the World Cup was in 1999. Note that the NIHF will try to compete for the 2028 World Cup.
The venue for the 2027 tournament will be decided at the IIHF convention in May. Germany and Kazakhstan want to compete.
Also at the congress, as the head of the IIHF Luc Tardif previously reported, a decision will be made on the progress of the national teams of Russia and Belarus in the 2023/24 season.
