Northrop Grumman has become the first company to open a plant in the United States to produce jet engines for hypersonic missiles. The company was founded in Maryland.
What is known
The United States, like other countries, pays much attention to the development of hypersonic weapons capable of reaching speeds of more than 6174 km / h (M = 5) and maintaining it throughout the entire flight distance. A new site called the Hypersonics Capability Center (HCC) will help achieve this goal.
Located in the city of Elkton, the enterprise will be engaged in mass production of engines for hypersonic missiles. The factory covers an area of 5574 square meters. Northrop Grumman officials said the new venture will support the Pentagon’s growing need for long-range weapons.
HCC now employs over 50 people. The company will produce engines for the Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile (HACM), and in the future will produce warheads, power plants and other components for future hypersonic systems.
HACM is the USAF’s top priority after the AGM-183 ARRW program fell short of expectations and is virtually guaranteed to be shut down. Until 2028, the service intends to invest almost $2 billion in the project.
At the end of the spring of this year, it became known that Raytheon had already begun testing components for a promising hypersonic missile. When developing weapons, the company uses its own developments from the Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC) project. During the winter, a nuclear bomber successfully launched the HAWC, and the rocket was able to reach speeds in excess of 6,100 km/h.
