Those who looked at the sky late on Monday evening could again see the northern lights. But the most beautiful skies could be seen with the help of a camera. If you missed the rare natural phenomenon, you might still be able to enjoy the strikingly colored skies tonight, says Weerplaza.
The weather service received beautiful pictures from Terschelling and Texel to places like Enkhuizen. The northern lights could even be seen on the relatively southern beach of Scheveningen. The sky also colored in the north of Groningen, although clouds threw a bit of a spanner in the works. As a result, the northern lights were less visible than the night before, says Rico Schröder of Weerplaza.
But the spectacle was not always easy to see with the naked eye. The enviable photos shared on social media are mainly the result of clever camera work. According to Schröder, the northern lights are less beautiful with the naked eye.
The special natural phenomenon caused many people to move to the coastal areas. Omrop Fryslân reports that a small traffic jam with cars arose at the village of Westhoek, which has about 250 inhabitants, because people wanted to see the northern lights. Dozens of people also gathered on the dikes in Zeeland, writes Broadcasting Zeeland. Among them were even people from Belgium.
Those who missed the northern lights may have a chance to see the phenomenon again tonight. “Coming night it will be clear and the temperature will drop considerably. The activities on the sun (the electrically charged particles that the sun ‘spits’ to the earth and cause the northern lights, ed.) are still there. The chance is certainly present that we can see it again tonight between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. It’s not the weather, we just have to wait and see.”
