Northern lights in Belgium: your most beautiful photos

A rather rare phenomenon at our latitudes occurred this Friday evening in Belgium but also in France, Switzerland and even England. The Northern Lights have been seen as evidenced by your magnificent photos received in our group RTBF, shared sky. We have to go back to 2003 to find northern lights of such intensity in our regions.

This phenomenon occurs when the sun releases a series of coronal mass ejections (which are explosions of energetic particles and mag fieldsnetics) towards Earth. When these particles arrive in the atmosphere, they react with a bunch of gases which appear in pink, green, orange or purple colors. The sun being in strong activity these days has caused a magnetic storm of rare intensity. On a scale of 0 to 5, the storm was at its worst.

These northern lights could still appear this Saturday but also in the coming days while gradually losing their intensity.
