On Sunday evening there was a special natural phenomenon in the Netherlands. The northern lights were clearly visible in several places in the country. Images on Twitter show a red and green glow in the sky, reports Hart van Nederland.
People saw the northern lights in Genemuiden (Overijssel), Nijkerk (Gelderland), Dokkum (Friesland), Franeker (Friesland), Lauwersoog (Groningen) and the Wadden area, among others. But also in Egmond aan Zee the sky turned red and green.
The weather phenomenon is caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with nitrogen and oxygen particles at enormous speeds of hundreds of kilometers per second. This happens high in our atmosphere, between 100 and 300 km altitude.
The particles get an increased energy level due to these collisions. To get rid of this, the particles emit energy in the form of light: the northern lights.
