Northern Ireland pub goes viral with touching clip to combat loneliness

Read video transcript

“Charlie’s Bar” releases a Christmas video that is suddenly viewed millions of times.

The family business from Northern Ireland wants to remind people that Christmas is not a happy time for everyone – and small gestures help.

The owners are using the video to promote the opening of their pub on British Christmas, December 25th.

They want to help people combat loneliness. At the same time, the pub is appealing for donations to a non-profit organization that looks after the elderly or lonely people.

In a post on the short message service X (formerly Twitter), the video was viewed more than 8.7 million times and there are more than 80,000 likes on the pub’s Instagram channel.

Especially at Christmas time, companies or organizations produce content to draw attention to the issue of loneliness.
But loneliness is not just a big problem at Christmas and can affect all age groups.

People are particularly at risk in transitional situations in life, such as starting college, starting a career or retiring, or if the person is hit by a stroke of fate, such as a separation or the loss of a loved one.
