Jakarta – The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Forecast Center said geomagnetic storms were causing the northern lights to be seen in up to 48 countries. How come?

Solar storms or geomagnetic storms are disturbances in the Earth’s magnetosphere caused by coronal mass ejections (CME) or coronal ejections and solar wind.

Citing Earth.com, NOAA issued a severe geomagnetic storm warning on September 12 and will continue until September 14, 2024. However, since September 16 things have calmed down, with only a few solar flares reported .

So in May 2024, people will be observing the northern lights in Oklahoma and Florida. In November, the northern lights or what is known as the aurora borealis can be seen further south in the Netherlands.

Effects of solar storms in Indonesia

Widely discussed, the Acting Head of the Center for Technical Seismology, Geophysics and Time Signals at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Group (BMKG) Setyoajie Prayoedhie explained that Indonesia was not affected by anything.

“This can happen because the Indonesian region is on the equator so it will be protected by a strong magnetospheric belt,” he said, quoted from the detikEdu archives.
