“Russia is not interested in international agreements, Russia is not interested in international regulations, but here is a question of political will and desire to do something. Russia has the political will not to count on the sacrifices of its citizens, soldiers, to simply continue this war – well, shoot, then shoot, it happened,” commented Artis Pabriks, director of the “Northern European Policy Center” think tank, in the TV24 program “Globuss”, discussing current events in international politics and in the Baltic Sea, including this week’s news that ten Northern European countries agreed on Tuesday, November 28, to send warships to the Baltic Sea to protect critical infrastructure after gas pipeline leaks.

“When Putin was asked about the Kursk submarine, what happened? Well, it sank! If we look at it purely technically and without this question of political will, then, of course, after the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO, Russia is not the country that could dominate in the Baltic Sea, because simply its capabilities are much smaller. If we want, we can close the Sound, both between Gotland and Kurzeme, and between Estonia and Finland – well, there are no options! The question is – is there political will? And, of course, is there a readiness here to look that opponent in the eye?” this is what Pabriks reasoned in the TV24 program “Globuss”, talking about geopolitical events around the Baltic Sea and the possible reaction against Russia in order to protect itself.
It has already been announced that ten Northern European countries agreed on Tuesday, November 28, to send warships to the Baltic Sea to protect critical infrastructure after gas pipeline leaks. After the meeting of the defense ministers of the member states of the Joint Response Force (JEF), the ministers announced in a joint statement that this group of countries has agreed to activate the “JEF Response Option”.

“This includes naval and air forces that will be deployed in the JEF area of responsibility as a military contribution to the protection of critical underwater infrastructure,” the ministers said in a joint statement. This is the first time that the JEF Response option has been activated,” the ministers said, adding that this “action will take place in early December”.
JEF is a 10-nation coalition focused on security in Northern Europe. The coalition includes Great Britain, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway.
“In maritime surveillance, about 20 warships will be active in the Baltic Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean to take into account the security situation and better protect critical underwater infrastructure,” Swedish Defense Minister Paul Junsson told Swedish broadcaster SVT.

The minister said that this action is not a response to a specific threat, but “a symptom of a very serious security situation in the world, first of all in our own neighborhood.” “Then we need to be able to carry out these types of operations to be able to protect critical infrastructure and also to send a signal to Russia,” Junson said.
