In the middle of the northern Black Forest, approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Stuttgart, the first long distance event in “The Länd” will take place on August 11, 2024. Baden-Württemberg is the perfect federal state to host a triathlon, according to Gundolf Greule, managing director of the organizing non-profit agency Tri-Events Baden-Württemberg. Lots of water, few metropolitan areas, a quiet location in terms of traffic and beautiful, impressive nature are a few of the points in favor of a triathlon event in southwest Germany. With the race in the Black Forest, there will be eight races over 226 kilometers in Germany.
New way to organize a triathlon
“Planning a long distance requires a lot of consideration; it was important to us in advance that we choose a new approach. Regionality is important to us, we want to take the citizens with us and create a feeling of support within the district,” explains Gundolf Greule. “In addition, we have two partners, the northern Black Forest tourism region and the city of Nagold, who support the entire project.” There is already a vision for the coming years. Greule mentions that they are planning on having 500 participants this year, but are expecting an increase in the coming years so that they can do justice to a major event. There is space for 2,500 starters and there is also the possibility of making changes to the route if necessary in order to avoid traffic jams.
A weekend for the whole family
The long distance takes place on Sunday, August 11, 2024. The day before there is also a people’s distance (400 meters swimming, 20 kilometers cycling, five kilometers running) and a children’s triathlon, so there is something for the whole family. The venue for the people’s and children’s triathlon is the city of Nagold, which is also the hub for the long distance. Only the start of the 3.8 kilometer long swimming route takes place in the nearby ore mine of the Nagold Dam. The subsequent 180 kilometers of cycling route are divided into four laps of 45 kilometers each. During the second discipline you cross Nagold four times and drive through Ebhausen and Simmersfeld in the “Upper Forest” region, among others. Almost 2,000 meters of altitude have to be overcome before you go to the second transition zone. The final marathon takes place on a course with six laps, each a good seven kilometers through the city and along the Nagold river of the same name towards Wildberg.
