Northeast Storm Brings Flooding and Destruction, Causing Millions in Damage

The storm reached across the northeast in the morning after hitting parts of New York State and Connecticut. Some cities have recorded 6 to 10 centimeters of rain since midnight, said Robert Haynes of the National Weather Service in Burlington, Vermont.

“It looks like we are still on track for potentially large and locally catastrophic flooding. »

One of the hardest-hit areas was New York’s Hudson Valley, where rescuers found the body of a woman in her 30s whose home was surrounded by water.

She was trying to cross the torrents of water with her dog, and she was swamped by tidal waves, said Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus, testifying to the strength of the waves.

Vermont is also a region heavily affected by flooding, while the state of emergency is still in effect in this state. The worst affected areas are along the Green Mountains in southern and central counties of the state.

Mike Cannon, of the Vermont Urban Search and Rescue group, also specified that teams from North Carolina, Michigan and Connecticut were on the ground to reach and rescue residents of inaccessible cities due to torrents of rain, notably those of Londonderry and Weston.

Kathy Eason, an employee of the Center for Highland Falls, was stuck at her workplace due to the intensity of the flooding that affected her community.

Road damage and complications

Authorities say the storm has already caused tens of millions of dollars in damage in addition to causing numerous transportation complications. Several roads and bridges were washed away by the floods.

The storm also forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights at Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark airports as well as Boston’s Logan airport over the past 24 hours. Rail carrier Amtrak meanwhile temporarily suspended service between Albany and New York.

Recall that in 2021, Hurricane Ida caused the death of around forty people in the states of New York and Maryland while rain records were recorded.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for much of Quebec and heavy precipitation is expected this evening in several regions.
