The AEPMF (Association for the Study and Preservation of French Mineralogy) announces the reopening of the Mines and Minerals Museum in Blain (Loire-Atlantique) in this month from April 2022.
3,000 mineralogical samples
The museum will be open every afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. during the school holidays et every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. the rest of the time.
This place is solely devoted to French mineralogy, which presents more than 3,000 mineralogical samples divided into 240 varieties.
“The collection has been assembled over more than 45 years of prospecting, exchanges and purchases. It is presented in a unique setting in France. We have reconstructed a mine gallery from the beginning of the 19e century”, explains Alain Guillet.
Visitors will thus be able to discover the world of the mine and the life of the miner thanks to a presentation of tools (picks, lamps, axes, etc.) of the different ores mined in the region, and the different ores used in industry and the history of all the Loire-Atlantique mines.
24 showcases of minerals
“Five educational showcases explain the science of mineralogy through visual examples. The collection, which is the largest presented by a private museum in France, has been classified in chemical order according to the 9 recognized classes. The visitor will be able to discover in 24 showcases known minerals such as quartz, gold, calcite, fluorite, or even pyrite, but also rarities such as lulzacite : a mineral known only from the Saint-Aubin-des-Châteaux deposit (Loire-Atlantique) in Loire-Atlantique; or even myniulite, stolzite, pyromorphite…”
Visitors will also be able to discover this year an exceptional cassiterite twinned in the cross of Saint-André, found at the old Lavilleder mine at Roc Saint-André (Morbihan). This part was the subject of a scientific article in the international journal The Mineral KingdomNo. 164 “, specifies the person in charge.
Visitors can also bring back a small souvenir thanks to the Mineralorme shop, from a very wide choice of French and foreign minerals, tumbled stones, fossils and shells; from a beginner’s piece to a museum piece.
