After three cancellations, the North Netherlands Orchestra is finally performing at Lowlands this year. After three canceled concerts, the group of more than a hundred people will finally give a performance at the pop festival in the Flevopolder on Saturday.
After the orchestra’s concerts were canceled during the two corona years. failed again last year. The concert was canceled at the very last minute because some parts for the stage of main act Stromae arrived on site too late. In the tight schedule, there was no room for the North Netherlands Orchestra at that time.
“That was a shock for all of us”, soloist Annemarie Kremer looks back RTV Drenthe. “We work with soloists from all over the world. I myself live in the south of France. So I got a phone call in the morning saying: ‘The stage isn’t ready, so you don’t have to come’.”
That was swallowing and not just for Kremer. Horn player Hanna Guirten said last year that a long preparation had preceded the canceled performance. “If you look purely at the rehearsal time with the whole orchestra, I think it is about fifteen hours. But you have to consider how many hours the soloists have rehearsed and how much time the conductor has needed to study the score. Individual musicians are also certain two weeks in advance.”
Shit happens
Nevertheless, the orchestra did not hesitate for a moment when the organization of Lowlands offered a second chance. “Look, shit happens sometimes. I was really furious, but there’s no point in being angry,” said artistic director Marcel Mandos last August. “We are going to play there next year, we are very happy with that. We are just going to do that.”
And now the time has come. The orchestra is programmed on Saturday, so not on the very last day of the festival like last year. Soloist Kremer is looking forward to it. Even though she is used to big world stages, performing at Lowlands is a dream come true for her. “At Lowlands you have a very wide spectrum with all kinds of music and that includes classical music. That’s just great,” she says, when she frees up some time during rehearsals.
Join in and sing along
The choice of music is adapted to the slightly younger audience: Beethoven’s ninth symphony is played. With the famous hymn all people become brothers en Schiller’s poem ode to Joy. So it could just be hooking up and singing along. Annemarie Kremer hopes that the piece will lower the threshold for classical music among the festival-visiting young people. “We hope it enthuses them and that they think: let’s go to another concert.”
