North Macedonia Declares Russian Diplomats Persona Non Grata, Russian Foreign Ministry Responds – Latest Updates

This week, the North Macedonian authorities declared three diplomats from the Russian Embassy in Skopje persona non grata; this step will not go unanswered by the Russian side. This was stated today, September 15, by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

“On September 12, the North Macedonian authorities, without explanation, declared three diplomats from the Russian Embassy in Skopje persona non grata,” the diplomat said. “The irresponsible and hostile attack by the North Macedonian authorities will not go unanswered. We note that the North Macedonian authorities continue to move along the path of worsening confrontation and are driving bilateral relations, which are already in a deep crisis, into a dead end.”

As reported EADaily August 30, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov during a telephone conversation with the OSCE Chairman, the Foreign Minister of North Macedonia Bujarom Osmani pointed out the need to normalize the organization’s activities. The conversation took place on the initiative of the North Macedonian side.

North Macedonia is currently a member of NATO. The Assembly of North Macedonia ratified the protocol on February 11, 2020, and on March 27 of the same year, North Macedonia officially became a member of the alliance.
