North Korea has again failed to launch a spy satellite into space, the North Korean state news agency KCNA reported. According to Pyongyang, an error occurred during the third phase of the flight during the launch.

South Korea has confirmed that a long-range missile has been launched from the neighboring country. That happened from launch facility Tongchang-ri in the northwest. South Korea says it has spotted the long-range missile over the waters of the Korean Peninsula.

The South Korean military says it is closely monitoring North Korea’s activities and is alert to any provocations. Surveillance has been increased and the country is in contact with ally the United States, the army reports.

An emergency warning was issued on the Japanese island of Okinawa because of the launch. According to Japan, several parts of the crashed missile have now been found in the sea. On Tuesday, the Japanese Coast Guard reported that North Korean authorities had said a launch would take place between August 24 and August 30.

North Korea’s satellite launch is a violation of UN resolutions, the US State Department stressed today. Washington has called on Pyongyang to turn to diplomacy and refrain from “further threatening activity”.

First failed attempt

At the end of May, North Korea made its first unsuccessful attempt to launch a satellite into space. The satellite ended up in the sea west of the peninsula. The launch in May sparked widespread alarm in South Korea and Japan. South Korea eventually managed to recover parts of the missile. The country then reported that the equipment was not advanced enough to obtain military intelligence.

North Korea hopes to be able to keep a closer eye on South Korea and the United States with satellites. A third launch should take place in October.
