North Koreans banned from laughing and drinking because of mourning for Kim Jong Il

In the days of last year’s mourning, citizens in a state of intoxication were arrested and taken away. After that, no one saw them again.

For 11 days, North Koreans were banned from laughing, celebrating birthdays, burying loved ones and drinking alcohol. All because of the tenth anniversary of the death of the leader of the party and the people of Kim Jong Il. About it informs RFA.

The country’s leadership has forbidden people to spend their leisure time and make purchases. In the days of last year’s mourning, citizens who were intoxicated were subject to arrest. Local residents say that such people were considered ideological criminals, they were taken away and no one else saw them. The party leadership organized specialized police brigades.

Even if a family member dies while mourning for the “Great Sun of the Nation” – one of the many titles of the deceased Kim Jong Il – crying loudly is not allowed. The body is taken out of the house only at the end of the mourning. Birthdays are not celebrated either.

Who was Kim Jong Il

Kim Jong Il became the leader of North Korea after the death of his father Kim Il Sung in 1994 and led the country until 2011, when he himself died. Then the power again passed by inheritance – Kim Jong-un.

The reign of Kim Jong Il is considered the most difficult period in the history of the DPRK, the so-called “Difficult Campaign”. In the 90s, North Koreans suffered from an economic crisis and a terrible famine. According to some estimates, up to three million local residents died in those years.
