“It is estimated that North Korean hackers’ cyber theft amounted to 1.7 billion dollars last year, breaking the previous record with about 2.2 trillion won in our money.”
Reuters reported that this was revealed in a report submitted to the Security Council by a panel of experts on the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee on North Korea.
“North Korean hackers are reported to continue to launch successful attacks targeting cryptocurrencies and other financial transaction instruments internationally,” the report added.
The expert panel analyzed that hackers of North Korea’s General Bureau of Reconnaissance “are using increasingly sophisticated cyber technologies to exfiltrate funds and information.”
“In particular, foreign companies in the virtual currency, defense, energy, and health sectors have been targeted,” he said. “North Korea continues to access the international financial system and conduct illegal financial operations.”
The panel of experts said North Korea continues to develop nuclear weapons and produce fissile material this year, evading UN sanctions aimed at blocking funding for its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
The expert panel analyzed that North Korea continues to illegally export coal and uses various means of evading sanctions through ships to import refined petroleum products into North Korea.
It also said that North Korea violated sanctions and secured 14 new ships.
The panel of experts said the country would continue to investigate illegal imports of luxury goods from North Korea, saying that while most of its borders were still closed, the reopening of rail transport had boosted trade.
It also said it was investigating allegations that North Korea exported military communications equipment and ammunition, and that it may have traded arms and other military aid to other UN member states.
