A five-day lockdown has started in the North Korean capital Pyongyang due to a ‘lung disease’. This is reported by the South Korean medium NK News on the basis of a message from the North Korean government. Whether it concerns corona is not clear.

Due to a sharp increase in the number of cases of lung disease, residents of Pyongyang have to stay at home until Sunday. They also have to have their temperature measured several times a day.

According to NK News, which monitors developments in North Korea, it seems that residents of the capital fear that the lockdown will last longer and are therefore hoarding. It is unclear whether strict measures have also been imposed for other regions in the country.

Battle won

Last year, the North Korean government first reported corona cases, but stated in August that it was had won the battle with the virus. How many people ultimately contracted the virus has never been disclosed, partly due to a lack of sufficient testing capacity.

However, daily figures were kept of the number of people with a fever. In the end, a total of almost 4.8 million reports would have been made in a population of about 25 million people. No new cases have been reported since July last year.
