North Korea to Deport American Military Man Travis King for Illegal Border Crossing

The North Korean authorities have decided to deport the American military man Travis King, who fled to the DPRK in the summer of 2023, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reports.

“The relevant authority of the DPRK, in accordance with the legislation of the Republic, decided to expel Travis King, a US Army soldier who illegally invaded the territory of the DPRK,” the agency reported.

It did not specify when King would be deported.

23-year-old US Army private Travis King, who served in South Korea, crossed the DPRK border in mid-July 2023. To do this, the military man came to the Joint Security Zone between North and South Korea along with an excursion group, and then illegally crossed the demarcation line. Shortly before his escape, King was supposed to be removed from service and returned to the United States “for disciplinary reasons.” He was reported to be in custody on assault charges. On July 10, he was taken to the airport for a flight to the United States, but somehow managed to escape.

North Korean authorities later said that King decided to defect to the DPRK out of “antipathy toward the inhumane abuse and racial discrimination within the U.S. military and frustration with the unequal American society.” According to KCNA, the military man allegedly “expressed his will to emigrate to the DPRK or a third country.”
