Details: After the first news of the launches, there were speculations that it was an intercontinental ballistic missile, since Seoul predicted such a launch within this month.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff subsequently reported that it was a short-range ballistic missile.
The launch took place from an area near Pyongyang at 22:38 local time. The rocket traveled about 570 km and fell into the sea.
The launch coincided with the date of death of the previous leader of the DPRK, Kim Jong Il.
What preceded: Before this, the last time the DPRK launched a ballistic missile was on November 22; Seoul considers this launch to be unsuccessful.
Also in November, Pyongyang successfully launched into orbit military spy satellite – presumably with the help of Russia.
