The South Korean military announced that North Korea launched a long-range ballistic missile, days after Pyongyang threatened to shoot down any US spy plane that violated its airspace.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said, “North Korea launched an unidentified ballistic missile into the East Sea.”
And the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the South Korean army stated that it “detected what is believed to be a long-range ballistic missile launched from the Pyongyang area at around ten o’clock (01:00 GMT) towards the East Sea.”
He added, “The missile was fired on an upward trajectory and covered a thousand kilometers before it fell into the East Sea.” The upward trajectory means the missile is launched upwards, a method Pyongyang has said it has used in some weapons tests to avoid flying over neighboring countries.
South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency quoted North Korean state media as saying on Wednesday that North Korea had tested an intercontinental ballistic missile “Hwasong-18”. It stated that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the launch.
