North Korea reportedly fired a ballistic missile in the East Sea. North Korea’s ballistic missile launch occurred a few days after the arrival of a United States (US) nuclear-powered aircraft carrier for joint South Korean exercises.

The ballistic missile is said to have been launched near the Taechon area in northern Pyongyan province shortly before 7:00 am local time and flew approximately 600 km (373 miles) at an altitude of 60 km and a speed of Mach 5.

“Launch of ballistic missiles North Korea it is an act of serious provocation that threatens the peace and security of the Korean peninsula and the international community, “South Korea’s Joint Chief of Staff Kim Seung-kyum said in a statement.
The launch also came after reports indicated that Pyongyang may be preparing to launch a ballistic missile launched from a submarine.
After the launch, Joint Chiefs of Staff Kim Seung-kyum and US Korean Forces Commander Paul LaCamera discussed the situation and reaffirmed their readiness to respond to any threats or provocations from North Korea.
The South Korean National Security Council also immediately called an emergency meeting to discuss response measures and condemned the launch as a flagrant violation of UN Security Council resolutions and an unwarranted act of provocation.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who arrived in Seoul on Saturday evening from a trip to Britain, the United States and Canada, was also informed of the launch.
Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada estimated that the missile reached a maximum altitude of 50 km and may have flown on an irregular trajectory. Hamada said the missile fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone and there were no reports of shipping or air traffic problems.
“If you include cruise missile launches, this is the nineteenth launch, which is an unprecedented record,” Hamada said.
“North Korea’s actions are a threat to the peace and security of our country, the region and the international community and doing so during the invasion of Ukraine is unforgivable,” he said, adding that Japan has filed a protest. via the North Korean embassy in Beijing.
The US Indo-Pacific command said it was aware of the launch. The US Indo-Pacific command also reaffirmed the US commitment to the defense of South Korea and Japan.
“While we assess this event does not pose an immediate threat to US personnel or territory, or to our allies, the missile launch highlights the destabilizing impact of weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs.
