The ballistic missile, launched on Sunday, has reached an altitude of two kilometers and flew about 800 kilometers in half an hour, the South Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
The data suggest that North Korea has tested “the first medium-range missile since 2017,” said Joseph Dempsi, an analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, on Twitter.
The Japanese government’s spokesman, Hirokadzu Macuno, said on Sunday that a “medium- or long-range” missile had been tested.
The last time North Korea tried a similar missile was in 2017, when the Hwasong-12 missile flew 787 kilometers and reached an altitude of 2,111 kilometers.
South Korea reports that the rocket was launched at 7.52 local time (00.52 Latvian time) from the east coast of North Korea.
Japan, South Korea and the United States have condemned the launch of the rocket, which is the seventh this month.
The UN has banned North Korea from testing ballistic and nuclear weapons and has imposed severe sanctions.
But the East Asian state regularly tends to violate the ban and, under the leadership of leader Kim Chenun, has expressed its determination to strengthen national defense.
