The short-range missile was launched on New Year’s Eve local time from the capital Pyongyang and then crashed into the Sea of Japan, according to Yonhap.
According to Japanese media, the rocket traveled about 350 kilometers before falling into the sea.
The launch came less than a day after the Pyongyang regime fired three ballistic missiles. These missiles also fell into the Sea of Japan outside Japan’s economic zone.
Tensions on the Korean peninsula have increased significantly in 2022. North Korea has been conducting weapons tests nearly every month. Prior to Saturday’s test, the country had fired about 70 ballistic missiles on 38 separate occasions this year, according to Yonhap.
About eight of the missiles were said to be ICBMs, a type of missile that can be equipped with a nuclear warhead and has sufficient range to hit targets in the United States.
