North Korea fired three ballistic missiles on Wednesday, South Korea’s military says. That happened just hours after US President Joe Biden left the region.
Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol planned larger joint military exercises this weekend. They also agreed to deploy more US strategic weapons if necessary in response to North Korea’s increasing number of military exercises.
South Korea’s military command said the three surface-to-air missiles were fired from the Sunan area of North Korea’s capital Pyongyang in less than an hour. The Japanese Coast Guard reported at least two launches, and according to the Japanese broadcaster NHK the missiles ended up outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
It was Biden’s first visit to Asia as president. US and South Korean authorities had warned that North Korea, a nuclear-armed state, appeared ready to test weapons.
