North Korea fires ‘newly developed’ anti-aircraft missile

North Korea has fired a “newly developed” anti-aircraft missile, the state news agency KCNA reports. It is the fourth time in a few weeks that the North Koreans have fired a missile.

Earlier this week, North Korea launched a hypersonische raket, which involved firing ballistic missiles and a cruise missile with nuclear capabilities.

According to the North Korean weapons industry, the missile has “new important technologies”. The state news agency speaks of “remarkable combat performance”. Thus, the rocket could react very quickly and be extremely accurate.

It is not clear whether the test was successful. Normally, Japan, the United States and South Korea report that North Korea has conducted a missile test, but that has not happened yet. The North Koreans say the test is essential for the development of several anti-aircraft missiles.

Kim Jong-un absent

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is believed not to have attended the launch. The state news agency reports that Park Jong-chon, a member of the powerful North Korean politburo and Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, was at the launch.

There will be a UN Security Council meeting later today on the recent North Korean missile tests. That meeting was supposed to be yesterday, but was postponed at the request of Russia and China. Those two countries needed more time to study the situation, according to AFP news agency.
