South Korea’s military said North Korea allegedly fired a medium-range ballistic missile. This was done several days after Pyongyang carried out firing drills near South Korea’s maritime border.
“Our military detected a suspected medium-range ballistic missile launched from the Pyongyang area towards the East Sea at around 14:55 (0555 GMT),” Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said in a statement, referring to the waters in the area. also known as the Sea of Japan, reported by AFP, Sunday (14/1/2024).
The missile flew 1,000 kilometers (621 miles). JCS said authorities in Seoul, Washington and Tokyo were analyzing the specifications.
“We strongly condemn the latest missile launch by North Korea as it is a clear provocation that threatens peace and stability on the Korean peninsula,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Japanese coast guard also confirmed the alleged missile launch by North Korea. Quoted from information from the Japanese Ministry of Defense, ships were warned to be careful.
North Korea’s last missile test was the Hwasong-18, a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which was fired into the East Sea on December 18.
The test came days after North Korea conducted a series of rare live-fire drills near its maritime border with South Korea, prompting retaliatory drills and evacuation orders on several South Korean border islands.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un earlier this week branded Seoul his “main enemy” and warned that he would not hesitate to annihilate South Korea. This was conveyed by Kim Jong Un when he visited large weapons factories.
